With the goal of receiving type certification from European aviation authorities in 2025, German-based Lilium said it has submitted its means of compliance proposals to the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

This is one step that Lilium can now check off on its path to certifying its Lilium Jet aircraft, but the eVTOL developer still has a long way to go to achieve type certification.

This latest milestone comes after Lilium received its certification basis from EASA in 2020. Now, Lilium and EASA need to agree on the means to demonstrate compliance of the aircraft type with each of the requirements in the certification basis.

Last month, the German startup announced it planned to extend its certification timeline by a year, setting 2025 as its new target. Company executives cite Lilium’s current design activity status, discussions with regulators, and the global supply chain disruptions as reasons for the delay.

Lilium has since resumed flight testing at its new facility in Spain where it expects to expand its flight test envelope to include full transition between hovering and wing-borne flight, as well as high-speed flight. The company said it plans to develop its first conforming aircraft next year.

Along with working toward type certification from EASA, Lilium is also pursuing concurrent type certification validation with the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration.
