Recent testing performed on RAYCHEM brand SPEC 44 wire from Tyco Electronics Corporation has confirmed that laser marking is a viable cable identification method for SPEC 44 aircraft hookup wire. SPEC 44 wire, a product meeting the MIL-W-81044 standard, is a general-purpose airframe hookup wire. Laser marking of SPEC 44 wire is a big step forward in wire and cable jacket marking since it allows for quick, permanent, and legible marks. Prior to the laser marking breakthrough, ink jet printing or marking wheels were among the only methods wire harness shops and other wire processors had for identification of SPEC 44 hookup wire.
SPEC 44 aircraft hookup wire is used in many current commercial airframes manufactured both in the United States and Europe. Additionally, SPEC 44 hookup wire is used in military aircraft, civil aircraft and other military and commercial applications such as rotorcraft, tracked vehicles and wheeled vehicles.
Laser marking on white SPEC 44 hookup wire allows for marking contrasts up to 93%, which is considered excellent for aircraft standards. Additionally, testing confirms that the laser marking process presented no performance detriment to the insulation or conductor of SPEC 44 aircraft wire. Extensive performance testing has concluded that SPEC 44 wire can be laser marked without any deterioration in the products electrical or mechanical performance attributes.
For manufacturers currently using laser marking equipment, a common technique for wire identification, the ability to laser mark SPEC 44 wire offers additional production flexibility, as they can alternate between different types of insulation in the same marking line. Consolidation of marking processes into one line may translate into additional production cost reductions.
