Voyageur Aviation to introduce Airbus U030 Flexrotor to Canada

Voyageur Aviation will become the Canadian launch customer for the Airbus U030 Flexrotor uncrewed aerial system (UAS), after signing a purchase order that includes three aircraft at the Farnborough International Airshow.

“Today’s agreement is an exciting step for both Airbus and Voyageur,” Cory Cousineau, president of Voyageur, told media in a press conference announcing the order. “It brings together Airbus’s proven Flexrotor technology and Voyageur’s understanding of the Canadian operating environment to introduce a new UAS capability to Canada.”

The U030 Flexrotor is designed for intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance (ISTAR) operations, and has been used by both military and civilian operators around the world.

It has the ability to take off vertically before transitioning into forward flight, providing runway independence and range. The Flexrotor can fly for more than 12 hours with eight kilograms (18 pounds) of payload, allowing it to carry a wide range of sensors.

“Canada presents unique opportunities and unique challenges — from remote northern regions, to vast coastlines, maritime approaches, and critical infrastructure. There is growing need for flexible and reliable intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance solutions that can operate where and when needed,” said Cousineau.

“The Flexrotor platform is well suited to undertake that requirement. What is particularly exciting is that this is more than a purchase agreement. It’s the beginning of a collaboration with Airbus, focused on exploring how we can bring new capabilities to Canada, to both government and commercial customers.”

Voyageur, headquartered in North Bay, Ontario, is hoping to receive the aircraft by the end of this year, and is in the process of standing up the capability in preparation for the type’s arrival.

“We’re using that time effectively to onboard people, make sure we’re logistically prepared for the operation, and we’re working closely with Transport Canada from a regulatory aspect, as well,” said Cousineau.

Voyageur will be beginning operations with the aircraft in 2027, he added.

“We see significant demand in the marketplace,” he said.

Voyageur is in discussions with “various different stakeholders” as to first operations, said Cousineau, adding that the flexibility of the platform was its strength.

“So whether it’s wildfire monitoring, environmental monitoring, maritime patrol surveillance — it really fits into our current ISR profile as an operator and an in-service supporter.”

Dwayne Charette, president of Airbus Helicopters in Canada, said the entry of Flexrotor operations in the country represented an important milestone in the evolution of its aerospace and defense landscape.

“Across Canada, operators are being asked to do more than ever before,” he said. “This order marks an important step in broadening the solutions available to Canadian operators as they respond to increasingly complex defense, security, and public service missions.

“But this is about more than the first Flexrotor order in Canada. It marks the beginning of a new chapter in how uncrewed systems will support Canadian operators.”
