The Spanish Ministry of Defence has placed an order valued at €4 billion for 100 helicopters — the largest ever such order from the country’s armed forces.

The aircraft — all from Airbus Helicopters — include 13 H135s, 50 H145Ms, six H175Ms, and 31 NH90s, with deliveries due to begin in 2027.

The types will be used across the three branches of the Spanish armed forces, with the Spanish Air and Space Force receiving 12 H135s for advanced pilot training and light utility and observation operations, all six H175Ms for governmental missions such as transport, and 12 NH90s for tactical transport and special operations.

The Army is taking all 50 H145Ms for pilot training, light attack, light utility and disaster relief, and 13 NH90s; while the Navy will receive one H135 and six NH90s.

“By formalising these contracts, the Ministry of Defence fulfils its commitment to provide our armed forces with the latest generation of helicopters that are essential for their operations,” said María Amparo Valcarce García, Secretary of State for Defence. “This investment is strategic and is focused on significantly increasing Spain’s security and defence capabilities, ensuring national strategic autonomy in a key sector of European defence.”

According to a press release issued by Airbus Helicopters, the order will create more than 300 jobs over the next three years, with its industrial footprint in Albacete adding a military helicopter customization center and an international training center for H145M pilots and technicians.

The manufacturer said it will also develop the site into a Center of Expertise for digital capabilities, specializing in the creation of digital tools and cybersecurity for all Airbus Helicopters.
