The second prototype of the H140 — the new light twin-engine helicopter from Airbus Helicopters — has taken its first flight at the manufacturer’s facility in Donauworth, Germany.

The flight, which took place on Aug. 1, lasted for about 15 minutes — but an Airbus Helicopters’ spokesperson said the flight time was limited due to an incoming thunderstorm. The aircraft was said to have behaved as expected.
The second prototype (known as PT2) will be used for specific test campaigns, including performance in cold weather/snow, and hot-and-high.
Airbus revealed the existence of the H140 — which it hopes will build on the legacy and success of its H135 and H145 — at Verticon earlier this year.
The type is being developed from the H135, but provides significant design enhancements that promise improved performance, a 20 percent larger cabin, and enhanced comfort levels.
The design enhancements include the same bearingless five-bladed main rotor system used on the latest version of the H145, a raised tail boom, a new Fenestron design and a “T-Tail” horizontal stabilizer.
To date, Airbus has secured commitments, including firm orders, for 74 H140s. Among the customers are major HEMS operators — which are the key target market for the type — in the U.S. and Europe.
Airbus plans to use four prototypes in the H140’s flight test campaign, with PT3 planned to join in 2026, and PT4 at the end of that year. First delivery is scheduled for 2028.
