AXIS Flight Simulation is entering the helicopter simulation market, launching two new Flight Simulation Training Devices (FSTDs) to meet growing demand for pilot training in the sector.
The company announced two new rotary-wing pilot training products on August 31. The first is the AX-DH, which is based on the existing AX-D platform, a training device for the fixed-wing market. The AX-DH uses a ‘6-DOF’ (six degrees of freedom) electric motion system with high-resolution visuals designed to reproduce the handling and visual cues needed in rotary-wing training, according to Christian Theuermann, Executive Board Member at AXIS.
The second new product is the Flight Training Device (FTD), which provides a fixed-based option for operators who do not need a full-motion simulator, Theuermann said. The new systems offer full-scale, platform-specific cockpits, the option to move between Instrument Flight Rules and Visual Flight Rules, helicopter-specific flight dynamics, and night vision goggle (NVG) flying.
In an interview with Vertical in August 2026, Theuermann said the company aims to bring the first device to market within the next two years. The expansion has been driven by multiple factors, he added, including growing customer demand. He said there have been repeated requests from operators for such pilot training devices.
“It is also a natural extension of our business and regional jet simulator portfolio. We see demand for helicopter training expanding and believe our existing experience can be applied effectively in this market,” Theuermann added.
The simulators are designed to support a range of helicopters, depending on customer requirements, said Theuermann. The concept has been designed to make this possible: the core platform and visual system can remain common, while the aircraft-specific cockpit can be changed for different helicopter types.
“This will allow us to expand the aircraft we support without developing an entirely new training system for each one.”
The company sees potential in a range of markets, he said, including Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS), search and rescue (SAR) and offshore operations.
“The simulators are intended to support different rotary-wing operating requirements, including both individual and multi-crew training,” he said.
Theuermann said AXIS does not yet have a customer to announce for the new products, but he noted that the company has seen clear interest from a range of potential operators.
“We’re already talking to prospective customers and receiving enquiries relating to different helicopter types as we develop the offering,” he concluded. “Those conversations have been one of the factors behind our decision to enter the helicopter simulation space.”
